Episode 1: Chapter 2

The results and how it all started

So you may wonder how did I get infected with this virus?

This is how it all started.

March 2012, I joined an exclusive Bi-Male organization. This is not an ordinary Bi-Male Clan since the organization is registered as an NGO.

Every month they organize an activity and for this month, they decided to conduct a seminar for all the members regarding HIV\AIDS. As a member, I joined them though, I am fully aware of the topic since I’m a Nurse. The seminar was conducted by an NGO named Take The Test that provides free confidential HIV testing and counseling in Phils.

After the seminar, we were invited to join a Fund Raising Project where all the proceeds will be used for the org’s projects. The event includes a free confidential HIV testing and an open photoshoot. I decided to join this project not just because of the photoshoot but I also want to know my status.

A day before the photoshoot, I wasn’t really worried about the test since I am confident that I will never get infected.

I arrived at the site around 10am and the photoshoot finished at 11. Right after that, we went to the clinic where the screening will take place. After the test, the med tech asked me to go back to the lobby to wait for the results in 10-15mins. While waiting, I saw people coming in to get tested as well. I actually heard one lesbian proudly say that she’s negative and others who just got tested too.

Almost 30 minutes of waiting and I hadn’t received the test results yet, so I was a bit anxious then. A guy called my name (who’s one of the counselors) and asked me to talk to him personally. He introduced himself and asked me what would I do if the test turned out to be positive. So I just honestly answered "I don't know". He asked me if I'm ready to know the results and I just said Yes po.. (though I have a feeling that something's wrong now).

He then showed me the results and said that the test turned out to be “Reactive”. I was surprised of what I’ve heard, I really don’t know what to do. I literally felt numb and weak. I decided to calm down and listen to him.

He said that the result are not yet final and they will forward it to PGH or ELISA or confirmatory.

On my way home, I was crying and thinking how would I tell this situation to my parents. I am sure, if I disclose it to them, they will never accept me.

It has been a month since I got tested for rapid HIV antibody test or HIV screening. Sir
Jess, who's responsible for giving post test and counseling, told me that they'll just text me once the results are in.

Now, just this afternoon, I received a text message from Kuya Jess that the results have finally arrived and is ready for pick up. I went to  Quezon City Social Hygiene Clinic where I
met Dr. Incisa. She gave me the result in a sealed envelope. I am no longer hoping to get a Non-Reactive results, so when I opened it, I am not surprised that I get an HIV positive results and I'm reactive for HIV-I strain.

Tears started to pour down. I can't believe that I am an HIV positive now. All my dreams, all my
ambitions and all my plans started to disappear. It's like losing everything that I have earned.
